About
Alpe Salina sits at 2,050m on the slopes above Madesimo in Lombardy's Valchiavenna. Reach it from Madesimo village (1,550m) in 2.5–3 hours on a well-marked path that climbs steadily through larch forest and alpine meadow. The hut works as a base for routes into the Masino–Bregaglia massif and for ski touring in winter. Access is on foot year-round; the approach is non-technical but steep in sections.
The hut has 50 beds split across basic dormitories and a few smaller rooms. Meals are home-cooked mountain food—expect hearty pasta, polenta, and local cheese. Half-board is standard. Water comes from a spring; the hut runs on bottled gas and solar panels. Toilets are basic. The season runs June through September for summer hiking, with winter weekends open for ski mountaineers. A small alpine garden and views across to Pizzo Badile make it a genuine working hut, not a tourist stop.
Book directly by phone or email at least 3–4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Mid-week and shoulder seasons (June, September) are quieter. The hut closes October through May except for organized ski touring groups. Pay by cash or bank transfer. Contact details are available through rifugi.net or ask at Madesimo tourist information.
