About

Alpeggio Presolana sits at 1,540m on the Presolana plateau in the Orobian Alps, southeast of Bergamo in Lombardy. The hut is accessible from the village of Castione della Presolana (road to 1,200m) with a 45-minute climb through meadows and larch forest. Most hikers approach from the rifugio Naro trail junction below. The Presolana massif offers ridge walks between 2,500m and 2,521m (Punta dell'Ancia), making this a solid base for a 5-6 hour summit day.

The rifugio operates as a simple mountain shelter with capacity for around 30 people in dormitory beds. Meals focus on regional Lombard cuisine: polenta, casunziei (filled pasta parcels), and hearty soups. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut opens year-round but facilities are basic—expect no heating in winter and bring a sleeping bag even in summer. There is no electricity supply. A smaller attached building offers a few private rooms in peak season. The setting is exposed: afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through September.

Book through CAI Bergamo section (cai.it) or call the warden 3-4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Winter visits require pre-arrangement with the manager. The hut operates on a self-catering system off-season. Mule service is available in summer for heavy supplies if arranged in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends, especially July–August; weekdays are usually flexible. Contact the hut directly or check rifugio.net for current availability.
Open June through September; peak season is July–August. Winter closure is typical for this elevation and exposure on the Presolana plateau.
Drive to Castione della Presolana village and park near the 1,200m road end, then hike 45 minutes uphill through meadows and larch forest to the hut. Most people use the rifugio Naro trail junction as a reference point.
Expect basic refuge food (pasta, polenta, cheese, local meats) and simple dormitory beds; shower facilities are limited. Confirm meal service when booking—this is a straightforward mountain hut, not a guesthouse.
The 45-minute approach hike is manageable for fit families, but the ridge walks to Punta dell'Ancia (2,521m) require scrambling and mountain sense; not ideal for young children or inexperienced hikers wanting only easy terrain.
