Baita del Vai

Baita del Vai sits at 1,342m in the Val di Scalve, in the Bergamo Alps of Lombardy. Access is straightforward from Azzone village: the marked trail climbs steeply through beech forest for roughly 2 hours. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks and scrambles in the surrounding peaks, particularly toward Pizzo Camanon and the Alta Via delle Orobie. You can also use it as a waypoint on longer mountain traverses through this less-crowded section of the Orobie range.

The hut is small and simple, typical of working mountain shelters in this region. It offers basic bed spaces and serves hot meals—call ahead to confirm availability and menu, especially if you're arriving with a group. Water comes from the spring nearby. The operating season runs June through September, though dates shift depending on snow cover and staffing. Winter access is possible on foot only.

Contact the hut directly by phone or email before visiting. July and August are busy; aim for June or September if you prefer quieter conditions. The hut is managed informally, so reliability can vary. Confirm opening dates and meal service at least a week in advance, particularly for groups. Bring cash—card payments may not be possible.
