About

Bivacco del Servizio sits at 2,584m in the Spluga Valley on the border between Lombardy and the Grisons. The hut serves climbers and trekkers moving through this remote section of the Alps. Approach from Campodolcino via the Spluga Valley trail, a 3–4 hour walk gaining 1,100m elevation. The final section becomes steep and exposed; scrambling experience helps. Winter access is unreliable and dangerous.

This is a basic mountain refuge, not a staffed hut. It has 9 beds split across two small rooms with a basic shelter and stove. Water comes from melted snow or nearby streams. There is no electricity, heating, or catering. You bring all food, fuel, and sleeping bags. The bivacco opens year-round in principle, but snow and ice make winter access risky. Spring to autumn is practical.

Book through CAI sezione Valle Spluga or check rifugi.net for current conditions before travel. The bivacco fills during July and August on weekends when climbers base themselves here for Mont Spluga or Passo del Spügen crossings. No telephone or online booking system exists—contact the managing section directly or check in-person. Bring a stove, fuel, food, and warm kit. Bad weather closes this route quickly.
