About

Capanna Barone sits at 2,172m in the Lombard Alps, serving hikers and mountaineers crossing the high passes between the Bergamastro and Orobiche ranges. The hut is accessible from the Val Seriana valley; most approaches take 3–4 hours from the nearest road-head. Summer routes climb steeply through pasture and scree. Winter access is limited and depends on snow conditions. The location works well as a staging point for peak ascents and multi-day ridge traversals in the region.

The hut holds 35 beds across shared dormitories. Showers are available, a rarity at this elevation and useful after long days on exposed terrain. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; the kitchen handles mountain food without fuss. The rifugio opens year-round, though staffing and heating drop outside July–September. Weekday visits are quieter than weekends even in peak season. Check current opening dates before you climb: winter conditions can force closures at short notice.

Book directly with the rifugio by phone or email as soon as your dates are firm. July and August fill quickly on weekends; 6–8 weeks ahead is wise. Weekdays in June and September offer more space. The hut manages its own reservations and does not use the rifugi.net system, so direct contact is your only option.

Expect half-board (dinner and breakfast) with simple hot meals; bring water bottles as high-altitude water sources are unreliable. Basic shared facilities; ask about shower availability when booking.
Better for experienced hikers and mountaineers due to steep 3–4 hour approach and 2,172m elevation; families with solid mountain experience and acclimatization can manage the hike, but it's primarily a staging point for ridge traversals and peak ascents.
