Costaccia

Costaccia sits at 2,328m on the Monte Rosa massif in Lombardy, accessed from Macugnaga. From Staffal (1,900m), the hut is a 4–5 hour hike via the Passo del Rosa route through open alpine terrain. The trail is well-marked and gains roughly 430m elevation. Winter access is unreliable; most climbers approach in summer and autumn when snow melt clears the passes.

The hut has 40 beds in mixed dormitories and offers half-board meals cooked on site. Water comes from meltwater sources and is always available. The kitchen provides substantial evening meals and packed lunches for early starts on surrounding peaks. A wood stove heats the common areas. Toilets are basic but functional. The hut operates from June through September, closing during heavy snow. Mobile signal is weak or absent.

Book direct with the hut manager by email or phone at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during good weather windows. September offers more availability and reliable conditions for climbers targeting the Rosa group traverse or day walks to Punta Gnifetti. Bring cash; card payment is not reliable. The hut has no shower facilities, so wash in the meltwater streams below.
