About

Rifugio Biancadino sits at 2,257m in the Orobie Alps above the Seriana Valley, 90km northeast of Bergamo. Reach it from Foppolo village in 2.5 hours on a steep, waymarked path. Alternatively, start from Lizzola to the north—the route is less direct but less punishing on the knees. Both approaches climb through beech forest before breaking into alpine grassland with views across to the Presolana ridge.

The rifugio is a solid walkers' hut with 80 beds across multiple rooms. Half-board is standard: hearty polenta, local cheeses, and pasta dishes at dinner. The kitchen runs a proper bar service. Toilets are basic but functional; there's no shower. The hut sits on the Sentiero delle Orobie, a multi-day traverse that attracts serious trekkers. From here, you can push on to Rifugio Allagoni (2,645m, 3 hours) or drop down to Rifugio Nembrina (1,625m, 2.5 hours) to the south. Open mid-June to mid-September, weather permitting.

Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the rifugio directly by phone (details via cai.it or rifugi.net). The hut is managed by CAI and listed on the CAI website. Payment in cash or card accepted on site. It gets busy with day-walkers on sunny weekends, so arrive by mid-afternoon if you haven't reserved dinner. Winter access is not possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends, especially July-September; weekdays are more flexible. Check rifugi.net or contact the hut directly—they fill up regularly despite being less famous than westernmost Orobie huts.
Typically June through September, weather-dependent; call ahead in shoulder months. Winter access is unreliable due to snow and avalanche risk on the approach.
From Foppolo village: 2.5 hours on a steep, waymarked path gaining roughly 800m. From Lizzola to the north: longer and less direct but easier on knees. Both routes climb through beech forest into alpine grassland.
80 beds across multiple rooms with half-board standard (dinner and breakfast included). Shower facilities are basic; confirm hot water availability when booking.
The Foppolo approach is steep and relentless—better for fit walkers than beginners; the Lizzola route is more forgiving. At 2,257m, it's fine for families with hill experience but not for young children or those new to mountain walking.
