Refuge Mottafoiada

Rifugio Mottafoiada sits at 1,325m in the Orobie Alps above Bergamo in Lombardy. Reach it from the Val Brembana via the small village of Olmo al Brembo. The walk from Olmo takes 2.5–3 hours on a steady forest path with minimal altitude gain. This is a valley-floor refuge, not a high mountain hut, making it accessible year-round for hikers who want mountain air without exposed terrain.

The rifugio has around 40 beds split between dormitories and a few small rooms. Meals are simple and generous: expect polenta, casserole, cured meats and local cheese. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast; packed lunches are available. There's a small bar, basic shower facilities, and reliable water. The hut operates year-round, though confirm opening dates before winter visits. Cell signal is poor but not absent.

This is a working hut for hikers doing multi-day loops in the Orobie, not a destination in itself. Book direct by phone (contact details via rifugi.net or CAI Bergamo website). July and August fill 3–4 weeks ahead, but weekday visits in shoulder seasons rarely require advance reservation. The hut serves local walkers as well, so expect a quieter, less touristic atmosphere than valley-base huts. Arrive by early afternoon to claim beds if you haven't booked.
