Rifugio Valtellina

Lombardy, Italy

About

Rifugio Valtellina sits at 2,050m in the Orobie Alps, accessed from the Val d'Arigna via the village of Carona. The hut lies on the main route between Rifugio Curò and Rifugio Alpe di Piazza. From Carona (950m), allow 3.5 to 4 hours of steady climbing through larch forest and pasture to reach the hut. The path is well-marked and merges with the Alta Via della Valtellina, a popular multi-day traverse.

The refuge holds 50 beds across shared dormitories. The kitchen serves three meals daily: hearty evening meals featuring Lombard staples, packed lunches for onward hiking, and a substantial breakfast. Water comes from a spring. The hut operates year-round but is quieter October to April. Bathrooms are basic—soap and towels provided, but bring your own toiletries. The hut has no heating, so summer visits are more comfortable.

Book direct by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead, longer for July and August. Contact the keeper for winter stays—staffing is sporadic during cold months. The hut fills quickly during the school holidays in August. Settle bills in cash; cards are not reliably accepted. Cell reception is weak, so call from Carona if needed.
