Cabin Volpi

Piedmont, Italy
About
Capanna Volpi sits at 2,460m on the slopes of Monte Rosa, in the Walser valleys of northern Piedmont. Reach it from Alagna Valsesia (1,191m) via the Gressoney-Staffal trail—a steep 4.5-hour push that gains 1,270m. The hut lies on the main approach to the Rosa Glacier and serves as a launchpad for alpine scrambles in the Monte Rosa group. Winter access is severely limited; summer trails are snow-free by late June.
The hut has 50 beds split across small rooms and offers half-board meals. The kitchen provides solid mountain food—pasta, polenta, and meat dishes—with vegetarian options available on request. Water comes from a spring; electricity is limited. The toilet is basic. The hut typically opens mid-June through September, depending on snow and avalanche conditions. Phone reception is poor; bring a paper map.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone (call ahead from the valley—the line is unreliable) or reserve via email. Expect the hut to be full 2–3 days per week during peak season. Arrive by 15:00 to guarantee hot water. Bring cash; cards are not accepted. The hut is managed independently and has no CAI affiliation. Descents to the valley take 3.5 hours; give yourself daylight.
