Le Grillet CAS
1.3
Piedmont, Italy
About
Le Grillet CAS sits at 2,570m in the Cottian Alps, above the Val Varaita in Piedmont. Reach it from Casteldelfino village (1,350m): hike via the Pian della Regina path in 4–5 hours, or climb direct from Ponte Queyras in 3.5 hours. Both routes are well-marked but steady. The hut marks the start of approaches to Monviso (3,841m) and sits on the watershed trail linking Piedmont to the French border.
The hut is managed by the CAS (Club Alpino Italiano) and holds 50 beds in small dorms and doubles. Meals are served daily: basic but adequate for mountain work. Cooking fuel and gas stoves are available if you bring your own food. Water comes from a spring; shower facilities are minimal. The hut opens mid-June through September, weather permitting. Winter closure is firm.
Book direct with the hut by phone or email at least 3–4 weeks ahead in July and August. July and August weekends fill quickly. The hut is less crowded in June and early September, when weather is still reliable. Contact details and current rates are on cai.it or by calling ahead to the Casteldelfino municipality office for the current warden's number. Arrive with cash: card payment is unreliable at this elevation.
