About

Locale invernale sits at 2,347m on the eastern slopes of Monte Rosa, accessible via the Val d'Ayas valley near Champoluc. The standard approach takes 3–4 hours from Champoluc village (1,570m), following marked trails through larch forest and alpine meadow. Winter access requires skis or snowshoes; the route is straightforward but exposed to cornicing on the ridge section above 2,000m.

This is a small, staffed winter refuge with 12 beds in shared dormitories. Meals are served daily during the open season. Facilities are basic—expect composting toilets and mains water but no shower. The hut operates November through April, weather permitting. It functions as a working base for ski touring in the Monte Rosa group and hiking routes across the watershed. The location gives you direct access to the Gran Balcon route and climbs toward the Castore and Lyskamm saddles.

Book direct with the managing body or through rifugi.net. Winter weekends fill quickly from December through February; reserve at least 4 weeks ahead for these periods. The hut may close temporarily during storms or severe wind. Confirm opening dates and conditions before travel, as Alpine weather above 2,300m changes fast.

Open winters only (typically December–March depending on snow conditions); staffed daily during operation. Check current status with CAI or the hut directly before planning.
