Refuge de Rabuons

Rifugio Rabuons sits at 2,523m in the Maritime Alps above the Gesso Valley in Piedmont. The hut is reached from the village of Terme di Valdieri in about 4 hours on foot via the Pian della Casa trail. Most hikers approach from the south, tackling steady elevation gain through larch forest before breaking above treeline in the final stretch. The location works as a base for peaks in the 3,000m range or as a waypoint on multi-day traverses through this quieter corner of the western Alps.

The rifugio sleeps 36 people across small dormitories and a handful of doubles. Half-board is standard: dinner and breakfast are included with accommodation. The kitchen serves straightforward mountain food rather than fancy plating. Water comes from springs nearby. The hut runs from June through September, closing during autumn storms and winter snow. Call ahead in shoulder months—staff can give you precise opening dates.

Email or call to book, especially for July and August when the hut fills on weekends. July is peak season here; book 4–6 weeks ahead if you're set on specific dates. June and September are quieter, and you'll often get space with shorter notice. The hut takes phone bookings up to a few days before arrival if you're flexible. Confirm your arrival time so the guardian can time dinner service.
