Refuge Albergo Alpino "Pian del Re"

Pian del Re sits at 2,020m in the Po Valley source area, deep in the Cottian Alps above Crissolo in Piedmont. The standard approach follows the valley floor for roughly 2.5 hours from the road end at Pian del Re settlement. The path is straightforward and well-marked; most fit hikers make it without scrambling. In winter the hut closes and the approach becomes serious snow mountaineering terrain.

The rifugio operates as a simple mountain hotel with 40 beds across mixed dormitories and private rooms. Half-board (bed, dinner, breakfast) is the norm; they do packed lunches for summit attempts. The kitchen serves solid mountain food, not haute cuisine. Hot showers exist but water is rationed—expect European mountain-hut standards, not hotel comfort. The hut has a radio but no mobile signal. Open from mid-June through September only.

This is the main hub for ascents of Monviso (3,841m), the most obvious peak from the hut and visible for hours before you arrive. Most clients aim for Monviso or one of the nearby 3,000m passes. Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August; June and September are quieter but weather is less reliable.
