Refuge Vitale Giacoletti

Rifugio Vitale Giacoletti sits at 2,741m in the Maritimes Alps above the Val Gesso in Piedmont. Reach it from Pietraporzio village by hiking the mule track via Pian dei Laghi—allow 4 hours of steady climbing through larch forest and open meadow. The approach is well-marked and moderately steep. Most climbers use this hut as a base for summits in the high Maritimes, especially Cima delle Saline (3,076m) or Monte Matto (3,097m).

The hut holds 60 beds across dormitory rooms. Staff serve dinner and breakfast on request, with simple, hearty food typical of Piedmont refuges. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut operates July through September—earlier and later dates depend on snow and staffing. Winter access is unpredictable. Basic facilities include a small common area with a wood stove and an outdoor toilet situation; expect modest alpine standards, not hotel comforts.
