About

Rifugio Città di Busto sits at 2,482m on the Ticino Alps' eastern flank, roughly 4.5 hours' walk from Macugnaga in the Anzasca Valley. The approach follows established mule tracks through larch forest, then opens to alpine meadow as you gain height. Most hikers start from Alpe Veglia lower down and climb steadily northward. The hut marks the gateway to serious peak-bagging terrain: Monte Rosa's lower satellites and longer ridge traverses are within reach.

The refuge holds 60 beds split across shared dormitories. Meals are available for residents—expect simple, filling mountain food rather than refinement. Hot showers and basic storage exist. The kitchen closes mid-afternoon, so eat when they serve. Most water comes from snowmelt in early season; August onwards is drier. The hut opens late June through September, though exact dates shift yearly with snowpack. Check ahead in early season.

Book directly by phone with the CAI Sezione di Busto Arsizio. July and August fill quickly, particularly Friday and Saturday nights. Mid-week visits in June and September offer more space and solitude. If the hut is full, the Rifugio Zamboni (3,000m further northeast) is your backup option, though that's another 2 hours' climb.

Book 2-3 weeks ahead during July-August; weekends fill quickly. Call the hut directly or check rifugio.net for availability.
Typically open June through September, depending on snow conditions. Confirm dates before planning—late spring and early autumn can be unpredictable at 2,482m.
Start from Macugnaga in the Anzasca Valley; the hike is roughly 4.5 hours via established mule tracks through larch forest, gaining elevation steadily northward. Many hikers begin from Alpe Veglia lower down for a gentler approach.
60 beds available; expect half-board meals (dinner and breakfast included). Bring a sleeping sheet or rent one; showers are typically cold water or limited.
Not ideal for beginners—4.5 hours at altitude and serious peak-bagging terrain nearby mean it suits experienced hikers. Families with older children used to sustained climbs will manage, but it's primarily a base for ridge traverses and Monte Rosa satellite peaks.
