Refuge Moglietti

Rifugio Moglietti sits at 2,545m on the slopes of Monviso in the Cottian Alps. Reach it from Pian del Re (2,195m) in 3–4 hours via a steady trail through alpine meadows and scree. The final approach crosses boulder fields; the path is clear but unrelenting. From Crissolo village (1,018m) in the Val Po, allow 5–6 hours total. Most hikers use this hut as a base for Monviso's summit (3,841m), a serious climb requiring rock scrambling skills and 4–5 hours from the refuge. The hut also works for loop walks around the Pian del Re basin or as a waypoint on east–west valley traverses.

The refuge holds 65 beds across mixed dorms and smaller rooms. Staff serve dinner and breakfast in the dining area; meals are hearty and reliable, though not fancy. The kitchen provides hot water for thermos flasks. Water comes from mountain springs. There are no showers. The hut operates from June to September, closing during winter snow. The location is exposed; weather changes fast. Arrive in the afternoon and expect cold nights even in summer.

Book direct with the refuge by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly during good-weather weekends. Phone ahead to confirm water and shelter availability in early June and late September, as staffing ramps up gradually. No credit card payments on arrival, so bring cash.
