About
Winterraum sits at 2,284m on the border between Piedmont and Aosta Valley, accessed from the Val d'Aosta side via the Rifugio Città di Chivasso. The approach takes 3–4 hours from Pont, climbing steeply through alpine pasture and rocky terrain. The hut serves as a staging post for ascents of Gran Paradiso (4,061m) and traverses across the Gran Paradiso massif. Most climbers reach it as part of a longer traverse rather than as a destination in itself.
The refuge is basic and small, with capacity for around 20 people across dormitory rooms. Half-board meals are provided; the kitchen handles standard mountain food well. There's no shower. The season runs late June to September, depending on snow conditions. Water comes from snowmelt and natural sources. The building is straightforward stone—functional, not comfortable, but adequate for a high-altitude mountaineering base.
Book through Rifugio Città di Chivasso (the managing hut for Winterraum) by phone or email. July and August fill quickly if you're planning Gran Paradiso ascents; book 8–10 weeks ahead for those months. June and September are quieter. Check conditions with the managing hut before arrival, as snow and weather can affect access and operations.
