About

Capanna Cervino sits at 2,084m on the south flank of Monte Cervino, between the villages of Valtournenche and Breuil-Cervinia. From Valtournenche village (1,524m), the walk takes 3 to 4 hours via the Sentiero dei Viticoltori—a steady climb through larch forest and alpine meadow. The hut marks a key waypoint for anyone ascending Monte Cervino from the Italian side, and sits directly on the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi) long-distance route. The position makes it useful for day hikes into the surrounding peaks and as a base for acclimatization before higher climbs.
The hut has 20 beds across simple rooms. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard. The kitchen produces hearty mountain food—expect polenta, risotto, and local cheeses. Water comes from a spring. Heating is basic, and you should expect cold nights even in summer. The hut opens from June through September, weather permitting. No shower facilities; washing is a washbasin affair. The guardians are experienced mountaineers who know the routes in detail.
Book directly by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly during the peak climbing season when people are doing the Cervino ascent. Off-season (June and September) you can often book with less notice. Day visitors are welcome but should arrive by afternoon to avoid crowding the evening meal.
