Drassbergalm

Drassbergalm sits at 2,055m on the eastern slope of the Zillertal, deep in Trentino's high pasture country. Reach it from Mayrhofen (Austria side) via the Zillergrund valley—roughly 2.5 hours on foot from the valley floor. The trail climbs steadily through larch forest, then opens onto meadows. Most hikers approach from Südtirol/Alto Adige: the path from Zamserbach near Mayrhofen also works, though Austrian border crossing rules apply. Check current access before heading out; local conditions change seasonally.

The hut runs as a traditional Alpine dairy farm and small refuge. It offers 20 beds across basic rooms, with meals built around what the farm produces. Half-board is standard. The kitchen serves hearty mountain food—expect polenta, cheese, and game depending on season. Facilities are simple: cold-water showers, no WiFi, no phone signal. This is a working farm first, a hut second. Open June through September only; July and August draw families and valley hikers, so expect full occupancy on weekends.

Book ahead by contacting the hut directly through the AVS (Alpenverein Südtirol) or cai.it networks. July and August require booking 8 weeks in advance. The hut sits in border country where Austria and Italy meet—confirm your nationality documentation if crossing from Mayrhofen, as the route occasionally touches Austrian territory. Winter access is impossible; spring and autumn have restricted capacity.
