About

Malga Boalon sits at 1,650m on the eastern flank of the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo. You reach it in 2.5 hours from Passo Ghedina (2,135m), following the trail past Lago di Sorapis. The approach is steady, mostly on marked paths through larch forest and alpine meadow. In summer, you can drive closer to the Passo and shorten the walk to 90 minutes. Winter access depends on snow conditions and road closures.

The hut operates as a rifugio and working alpine dairy farm. It sleeps around 40 across simple rooms, most with 2-4 beds. Meals center on local Ladin and Veneto cooking: fresh pasta, game in season, and house-made ricotta. The hut makes its own cheese from the dairy herd—worth trying if available. Facilities include basic showers, outdoor toilet (no modern bathrooms), and a wood stove in the common room. Open late May through September; staffing can be patchy outside July and August.

Book directly by phone or in person at least 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends, 4-6 weeks for July-August. The hut fills quickly with local hikers on Sundays. Half-board is mandatory in peak season. Mobile signal is weak but usually available outside the building. Payment is cash only.
