Malga Valcigolera

Malga Valcigolera sits at 1,880m on the eastern flank of the Dolomites, accessible via hiking trails from the Passo Ghedina (2,135m) area near Cortina d'Ampezzo. Most approach routes take 2–3 hours from the pass, depending on your starting point. The hut works well as a base for day walks across the high pastures or as a waypoint on longer ridge traverses through the region.

The malga operates as a simple mountain restaurant and basic overnight refuge with a handful of beds. Meals focus on local Ladin and Alpine cuisine—expect hearty pasta, cheese, and cured meats rather than fancy cooking. Water and power are basic. The hut typically opens from June through September, with peak use in July and August when the high pastures green up and families hike the area. Call ahead to confirm exact opening dates each season.

Book by email or phone 4–8 weeks before your visit during summer months. July and August fill quickly on weekends. The hut can be quiet midweek in June and September, giving you better odds of a bed.
