Malga Viosa Alta

Malga Viosa Alta sits at 2,285m in the Dolomites' Viosa valley, accessible from multiple approaches. The most direct route starts from Rifugio Auronzo (2,320m) via a 2-hour traverse across alpine meadows and scree. From the south, the Tre Cime approach takes 4-5 hours from Lago di Sorapis. The hut serves as a base for traverses toward Passo Ghedina and climbs onto the surrounding limestone peaks. Summer snow usually clears by late June.

The hut is a working alpine dairy (malga) that has welcomed hikers for decades. It offers 20 beds in simple rooms and serves hearty meals including fresh ricotta and local cheese when available. Water comes from a spring. The facility operates seasonally from July to September, with variable staffing depending on dairy operations. Expect basic comfort and limited electricity; bring a headlamp. The outdoor seating area faces open meadows that turn vibrant with wildflowers in July and August.

Book direct by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during clear summer periods. June and early September offer quieter conditions but staff presence is less reliable—confirm dates before planning. Half-board is standard.
