About

Malga Viosa Bassa sits at 2,050m in the Brenta Dolomites, accessible from the Val di Non valley. The approach from Fondo takes 2.5 hours via a well-marked path that gains 900m steadily through meadow and larch forest. Most hikers arrive from the south via Rifugio Nambino (1 hour further descent), making this a natural stop on multi-day traverses. The hut marks the transition between easier valley walking and serious alpine terrain—scrambles and via ferrata routes depart from here toward Cima Brenta (2,564m) and Passo del Grosté.
The hut operates year-round as a working mountain farm (malga). It's small and rustic, sleeping around 20 people in mixed dorms and a couple of doubles. Meals are home-cooked with farm produce; half-board is standard and non-negotiable. Showers are cold water only. The owner runs cattle at altitude during summer, so the atmosphere is working farm, not tourist resort. No electricity or phone signal—bring a headtorch. Water comes from the spring outside.
Book ahead year-round; July and August weekends fill quickly. Contact the hut directly by post or through Rifugio Nambino across the valley. Winter access depends on snow conditions and hut closures—confirm opening dates before planning an off-season visit. Payment is cash only.
