About

Obere Birg Alm sits at 2,180m in the Zillertal, a major valley in Trentino-Alto Adige that runs north–south between the Zillertal Alps to the east and the Tux Alps to the west. Reach it from the village of Mayrhofen (630m) via the Zillertal valley road. The main approach takes 3–4 hours on foot from Mayrhofen, gaining 1,550m steadily through forest and alpine meadow. An alternative is the cable car from Mayrhofen to Ahornspitze (2,304m), which cuts the approach to 2–2.5 hours. In winter or early season, check conditions before attempting the approach.

The hut is a small working farmstead with simple accommodation for roughly 20 guests in mixed or family rooms. Self-catering is not available; meals are served as part of the overnight rate and focus on regional Tyrolean food. Water and power are basic. The hut operates year-round, though it functions partly as a private residence. Reserve in advance, especially for weekends and summer months.

Contact the hut directly by phone or email to confirm availability and book. Internet access is limited. The hut does not use the standard rifugi.net system. August is busy; July and September are quieter. Allow at least two weeks' notice for summer booking, longer for July weekends. Bring cash—card payment options may not be reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends and peak season (July–August); weekdays are more flexible. Use rifugio.net or contact the hut directly for availability.
Open June through September; staffing depends on demand, so call ahead if visiting shoulder months. Winter access is unreliable due to snow and avalanche risk.
From Mayrhofen village (630m), hike 3–4 hours gaining 1,550m through forest and meadow, or take the cable car to Ahornspitze (2,304m) then hike 2–2.5 hours to the hut.
Expect basic mountain hut amenities: dorm beds, simple meals (dinner, breakfast, packed lunches), and cold water. Showers are rare at this elevation; bring a washcloth.
The cable car option makes it accessible for families with decent fitness; the full hike from Mayrhofen is steep and better for experienced hikers. Suitable for hiking; mountaineering routes require alpine skills.
