About

Rifugio Alimonta perches at 2,580 m in the Busa degli Sfulmini, a wild rock amphitheatre at the heart of the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino (municipality of Tre Ville, province of Trento), within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park and the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage area. It is the highest staffed hut in the Brenta group. Built in 1968 and still run by the Alimonta family as a private refuge, it is the classic launch point for the Via delle Bocchette Centrali, the most famous section of the Brenta's legendary ledge-and-ladder via ferrata network: from the hut, ladders climb the Vedretta degli Sfulmini snowfield to the Bocca degli Armi, where the airy ledges of trail 305 begin, finishing at Bocca di Brenta near Rifugio Pedrotti in about three hours. The hut offers 90 beds in dormitories and private rooms of two to seven, token-operated hot showers, and half board with Trentino specialities. It opens from about 20 June to 20 September. Hikers reach it from the Vallesinella car park above Madonna di Campiglio via Rifugio Casinei and Rifugio Brentei in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours, no via ferrata gear required; ferratists also arrive via the Bocchette Alte or the Sentiero SOSAT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book through the online reservation system on the official website (rifugioalimonta.it); phone bookings (+39 379 2665489 in season) are accepted only for same-day or next-day stays. Check-in must be completed by 5:00 p.m. July and August nights sell out well in advance.
The hut is staffed for the summer season only, from roughly 20 June to 20 September (exact dates announced each year on the official site). Outside those dates the hut is closed; a winter contact number (+39 0465 801500) handles enquiries.
From the Vallesinella car park above Madonna di Campiglio (shuttle bus in high season), hike via Rifugio Casinei and Rifugio Brentei to the hut in about 3 to 3.5 hours. It is a steep but non-technical mountain trail with roughly 1,050 m of ascent — no via ferrata equipment needed.
The walking approach from Vallesinella suits fit hikers, including older children used to mountain trails, but this is a high rocky cirque, not a meadow stroll. The Via delle Bocchette Centrali itself is a genuine via ferrata requiring a harness, ferrata set, helmet and a head for extreme exposure — it is not for beginners without a guide.
The hut has 90 beds in dormitories and rooms for two to seven people, with or without bedding (bring a hut sleeping-bag liner if booking without). Half board includes a multi-shift dinner from 6:00 p.m. and breakfast from 6:30 a.m.; two hot showers operate with tokens from 3:00 p.m. for overnight guests.
