About

Rifugio Friedrich August (Friedrich-August-Hütte, in Italian also Rifugio Federico Augusto) sits at about 2,298 m between Col Rodella and Passo Sella at the foot of the Sassolungo (Langkofel) massif, on the Campitello di Fassa side in Trentino. The privately run, family-owned hut takes its name from Friedrich August III, the last King of Saxony, an enthusiastic Dolomites walker after whom the famous Friedrich August Weg (path 557) is also named — the balcony trail from Passo Sella to Rifugio Sassopiatto that passes the hut's terrace, with the Sella group, Marmolada and Val di Fassa spread out opposite. It began as a hay barn converted in 1962 and was rebuilt in 1995, and today offers around 42 beds, from panoramic rooms with private bathrooms to snug Tyrolean-style rooms, plus a restaurant known for meat from the family's own organic highland-cattle farm. Reaching it is easy: ride the Col Rodella cable car from Campitello di Fassa and walk about 10 minutes, or stroll 30 minutes from Passo Sella on path 557. The hut also opens in winter on the Sella Ronda ski circuit, with snowcat transfers from Passo Sella for evening guests, and is a natural stage on the Sassolungo circuit near Rifugio Sandro Pertini.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book directly with the hut on +39 353 3605674 or by email at [email protected]; friedrichaugust.it shows room types and half-board rates. Options range from panoramic superior doubles with private bathroom to Tyrolean-style family rooms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms.
The hut runs two seasons: a summer season from roughly mid-June to October, and a winter season during the Dolomiti Superski period, when it sits right on the Sella Ronda circuit. In winter, evening guests are shuttled from Passo Sella by snowcat. Check friedrichaugust.it for exact dates.
Take the Col Rodella cable car from Campitello di Fassa and walk about 10 minutes to the hut. Alternatively, from the Passo Sella car park it is an easy 20-30 minute walk on the Friedrich August Weg (path 557). Overnight guests may also use a private access road with a code.
Very much so. The Friedrich August Weg is a broad, gently graded balcony path — the section from Passo Sella to the hut gains barely 100 m — and the cable-car option makes it accessible to nearly everyone. It is one of the most popular easy walks in the Val di Fassa Dolomites.
The restaurant serves Ladin and Tyrolean cooking with a speciality in meat from the family's own organic farm of Scottish Highland cattle and yaks, plus pizza; lunch service runs late morning to mid-afternoon and themed dinners are bookable. The hut has panoramic terraces, is dog-friendly, and offers rooms with private or shared bathrooms.
