Rifugio Salei

Rifugio Salei sits at 2,225m in the Ortler Alps, accessible from the south via the Val di Zima. The approach takes 3 hours from Passo del Tonale (1,883m). From the north, reach it in 2.5 hours from Rifugio Cedec (1,997m). Both routes climb steadily through alpine terrain without technical difficulty. The hut makes a logical base for traversing the Ortler massif or approaching Punta San Matteo.
The rifugio accommodates 50 people in mixed dormitories. Half-board is standard: hearty dinners and basic breakfasts. The kitchen serves espresso and snacks throughout the day. Toilets and cold water are available. There is no shower. No WiFi—bring a book or paper maps. The hut opens mid-June through September, with seasonal closures in bad weather. Most nights you'll share the space with other mountaineers, not tourists.
Book by email 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill first. Email earlier if climbing the Ortler itself, as hut managers coordinate with guide services. Confirm your arrival time when you book. The hut has no website or online booking system, so email is your only option. Payment is cash only.
