Rifugio Vallaccia

Rifugio Vallaccia sits at 2,275m in the Gran Paradiso massif, accessible from the Val d'Aosta side. The standard approach is from Pont in the Valsavarenche valley. Most hikers reach the hut in 3–4 hours from the roadhead. The final stretch crosses open alpine terrain with cairn markers. You can also approach from the Nivolet plateau route if you're traversing the area, though this adds time and elevation gain.

The hut accommodates around 40 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are home-cooked and filling—expect polenta, pasta, and local cheese. There's a wood stove in the common room and a small bar. The hut has no WiFi, which suits the purpose: you're here to walk. Water comes from a spring. Toilets are basic but functional. The hut operates mid-June through September, depending on snow melt and weather.

Book directly by email or phone at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August. The hut gets busy with groups doing Gran Paradiso circuits and traverses. Phone calls work better than email for same-week availability. Confirm your arrival time the day before—the guardian needs to know numbers for cooking. Payment is cash only.
