About

Cabane de Bertol sits at 3311m on the frontier between Italy and Switzerland, in the heart of the Gran Paradiso massif. Reach it from Chamois village (2,000m) via the Ayas valley in about 5 hours' hiking. The trail climbs steadily through alpine meadow and scree, gaining 1,311m. Most parties break the approach into a two-day trip, staying lower the first night. You can also approach from the Swiss side via Saas-Fee, which takes 6–7 hours and crosses the Gabierscharte pass at 3,180m.

The hut holds 80 beds in shared dorms and serves dinner and breakfast. Water comes from a spring at the hut. Facilities are basic: you get a bunk and blanket, with a basic dining room and no shower. The CAS (Club Alpino Svizzero) manages it, though it sits on Italian territory. It operates year-round, though conditions in winter demand mountaineering experience and crampons. Summer sees heaviest use from July through early September.

Book direct by email or phone well in advance for July and August. Expect to reserve 8–10 weeks ahead during peak season. Single-night bookings are possible but less reliable. Bring your own sleeping bag even in summer—nights drop well below freezing at this elevation, and the hut's blankets alone won't keep you warm.

Open mid-June through September; peak staffing June–September. Check conditions before visiting in June or September as weather can close access earlier or later than expected.
From Chamois village (2,000m) via the Ayas valley: 5 hours and 1,311m elevation gain on a steady alpine meadow and scree trail. From Switzerland via Saas-Fee: 6–7 hours crossing Gabierscharte pass at 3,180m; most parties split the Italian approach over two days with a lower hut stay.
80 beds in shared dorms, simple meals (dinner and breakfast typical), water available. Expect basic mountain hut conditions; no showers, but a wash area is standard for high-altitude rifugi.
No—the 1,311m gain and high altitude (3,311m) demand fit hikers with mountain experience; children should be accomplished Alpine hikers. Best suited for mountaineers and experienced trekkers doing multi-day trips in Gran Paradiso.
