Refuge Aosta

Rifugio Aosta sits at 2,785m on the eastern flank of Gran Paradiso, accessed via the Valnontey valley from Cogne. The standard approach takes 3.5 hours from Lago Djouan (1,800m), climbing steady terrain through alpine meadow and scree. You can also reach it in 4 hours from the Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II side via the Colle delle Loccie (2,642m), making it a useful hub for multi-day traverses of the Gran Paradiso massif.

The hut holds 30 beds across simple dormitory rooms. It runs a basic half-board operation with dinner and breakfast included. There's a small bar and stove for drying kit. The season runs late June through September, depending on snow melt and weather. Water comes from a reliable spring. Facilities are functional rather than luxurious—expect cold showers and no electricity in sleeping areas.

Phone the hut directly to reserve beds. July and August fill quickly; book 4–6 weeks ahead for these months. June and September have more availability. The refuge closes during spring snowmelt (typically until late June) and again when October storms arrive. Check opening dates before planning an early or late season visit. Staff handle reservations by phone only—no online booking system.
