About
Cabane du Mountet sits at 2,886m on the Monte Rosa massif, accessed from the south via the Gressoney valley. From Gressoney-Saint-Jean (1,385m), allow 4–5 hours to reach the hut on a well-marked trail that gains 1,500m steadily through alpine pasture and rocky terrain. Winter access is severely restricted and requires avalanche awareness.
The hut holds 80 beds across mixed dormitories. Half-board and full-board meals are available; the self-catering kitchen serves those bringing their own food. Drinking water is reliable. The hut operates year-round but staffing drops sharply outside June–September; confirm opening dates before visiting. The location makes it a strong base for Monte Rosa traverses, Gran Paradiso approaches, and high alpine scrambles around the Gran Combin.
Book direct by email or phone at least 8 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill completely 10–12 weeks in advance. June, September, and early October see lighter pressure but still require 4–6 weeks' notice. Outside summer months, confirm availability when you call—the hut may operate on skeleton staff or close entirely depending on conditions. Bring a headtorch; the trail has no marked sections and cell signal is unreliable above 2,500m.
