Refuge Alpenzu Grande

Rifugio Alpenzu Grande sits at 1,779m in the Gran Paradiso National Park, Valle d'Aosta. Most hikers approach from the north via Pont or from the south near Ceresole Reale. The hut is a working base for routes into the Gran Paradiso massif and sits on established trail networks serving both valley crossings and peak attempts. Plan 3–4 hours from the nearest road access depending on your starting point.

The rifugio operates year-round with 40 beds across mixed dormitories and double rooms. Half-board is standard: hearty dinners of local pasta and meat, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches on request. The kitchen handles dietary requirements if notified ahead. Water comes from spring sources. Cell signal is patchy. Heating is adequate but rooms are basic—this is working hut infrastructure, not a hotel. The bar serves coffee and hot drinks throughout the day.

Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact CAI directly via rifugio.net or the hut's phone line. The hut fills quickly during climbing season (June–September) when parties stage ascents of Gran Paradiso, 4,061m. Weekday visits outside peak summer are easier to accommodate. Winter access depends on snow conditions; confirm current status before travel.
