About
Rifugio Arp sits at 2,439m on the approach to Gran Paradiso, the highest peak entirely within Italian territory. Drive to Cogne and follow the road to its end at Pont, then walk 2.5 hours up the Valnontey valley. The final stretch climbs steadily through larch forest before opening onto pasture where the hut appears. Most hikers use Arp as a base for day trips or as a staging post for longer traverses into the Gran Paradiso massif.
The hut holds 100 beds in shared and smaller rooms. Showers are available, which is worth noting for a hut at this elevation. The kitchen serves standard rifugio fare: pasta, risotto, local cheese and cured meat. Half and full board options work well if you're spending two or three days in the area. The hut operates year-round but is most reliably staffed June through September.
Book directly by email or phone at least two weeks ahead if visiting July or August. During shoulder seasons (June and September) you have more flexibility. The hut fills quickly on weekends. If the hut is full, Rifugio Sella, at 2,588m further up the valley, offers an alternative though it's a harder climb.
