About

Rifugio Combal sits at 1,969m on the east face of Mont Blanc, in the Vallée Blanche approach zone. Reach it from Courmayeur by hiking the Vallée Blanche trail; the walk takes 2.5 hours from the Maison Vieille trailhead. The hut also serves mountaineers preparing for Mont Blanc ascents via the Italian normal route. Strong hikers use it as a base for traversing the Brèche de la Brenva and linking to other high huts in the Mont Blanc massif.

The rifugio is small and simple, with 20 beds across dormitory rooms. Meals are home-cooked: dinner is a set menu with pasta and meat, breakfast is coffee and bread. Water comes from snow or a spring depending on season. The hut is staffed from June through September and caters heavily to climbers in July and August. Half-board (bed and dinner) is the standard arrangement; book it directly with the hut.

Reserve your bed at least 3 months ahead for July and August—the hut fills quickly with mountaineers on Mont Blanc climbs. Book directly by phone or email (contact details at rifugicourmayeur.it). June and September are quieter. There is no mobile signal; plan communication in advance. The hut is unstaffed October through May.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead during July and August, earlier if you're planning a Mont Blanc ascent. Contact the hut directly or use rifugio.net and cai.it for availability.
Open June through September, fully staffed during summer months. Outside this window, it may be unstaffed or closed—check ahead if visiting in shoulder season.
Start from the Maison Vieille trailhead near Courmayeur and follow the Vallée Blanche trail for 2.5 hours of hiking to reach the hut at 1,969m.
It's a small, simple hut with 20 beds in shared dorms, basic meals (half-board standard), and minimal facilities—expect no shower and mountain-hut standards for toilets.
Not ideal for beginners: the 2.5-hour approach is straightforward, but the hut serves Mont Blanc climbers and is best suited to fit hikers and mountaineers planning high-altitude objectives, not casual day-hikers or families.
