About

Bivacco Baccon-Barborka sits at 2,620m on the border between the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions in northeastern Italy. The hut serves as a base for ascents in the Carnic Alps, particularly the peaks around the Passo di Sesis. Approach via the Sesis Pass trail from Paluzza (about 3 hours) or from Sappada (4-5 hours depending on your starting point). The final approach is steep and exposed in places—bring a helmet and be comfortable on scrambling terrain.
This is a tiny unmanned bivouac with 4 beds total, so expect basic mountain shelter rather than hut amenities. There's no guardian, no meals, and no running water. Bring a sleeping bag rated for cold nights—temperatures drop significantly at this elevation even in summer. A stove and fuel are available for cooking your own food. The hut operates year-round, but winter access requires winter mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness.
Bring all supplies with you: water, food, fuel. Register in the logbook and leave a donation. There's no advance booking system—arrive early in peak season (June-September) as the four beds fill quickly on weekends. Check conditions before attempting winter access; snow and ice make the approach technical. The hut is maintained by volunteers, so treat it with respect.
