Casera Col Marsànch

Casera Col Marsànch sits at 1290m in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, on the Carnic Alps border crossing between Italy and Slovenia. Reach it from the village of Paularo by hiking northeast for roughly 4 hours along marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadows. The hut is also accessible from the Slovenian side via Col Bvert. The location makes it a logical stop on longer ridge traverses or multi-day loops linking the Carnic and Julian Alps.

The hut is a modest mountain refuge offering 30 beds in shared dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain food—expect pasta, polenta, and local meat dishes. The hut has basic bathroom facilities and provides hot water. Open year-round but staffing and meal availability is reduced outside summer months (June to September). Call ahead in shoulder seasons to confirm the kitchen is operating. Winter access depends on snow conditions and your own winter skills.

Book direct by phone or email. July and August require advance booking—contact 2–3 weeks prior. The hut rarely turns people away in shoulder seasons. Cell reception can be patchy; use a landline to call if your mobile doesn't connect. Half-board (bed and dinner) is standard. Pay in cash or by bank transfer before arrival.
