Casera Val Montina

Casera Val Montina sits at 1,847m in the Carnic Alps, accessible via the Val Montina valley from the village of Paularo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The approach takes 2–2.5 hours on a well-marked trail through beech forest and open meadows. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks toward Zauf (2,295m) and loops into the surrounding limestone terrain.

The refuge operates as a simple mountain dairy and basic hut. It offers around 30 beds in dormitory rooms and a few doubles. Meals focus on local pasta, polenta, and cheese—expect traditional Friuli cooking rather than haute cuisine. There's no hot shower; washing facilities are basic. The hut runs from late May through September, with peak activity in July and August. Electricity is limited and there's no mobile signal.

Book directly by phone well in advance—aim for 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly with Italian hikers. Weekday visits in June or September offer more breathing room. This is a working farm operation, not a professional tourist facility, so flexibility and self-reliance matter.
