Alpine Dairy Zoccolo di Sotto

Malga Zoccolo di Sotto sits at 1,657m in the Veneto Alps, reached via the Astico Valley. From Passo Xo (1,640m), the hut lies just 20 minutes walk away. Most hikers approach from Roana, a 2.5-hour climb gaining 800m through beech forest and alpine pasture. The route follows valley tracks that merge into steeper paths as you climb. Summer access is straightforward; winter snow closes the upper sections.

The malga operates as a working alpine dairy and simple refuge combined. It sleeps around 20 people in basic dormitory accommodation. Hot meals and packed lunches focus on local mountain food—polenta, soups, and seasonal dishes prepared from dairy products made on-site. Water comes from the spring. Toilets are functional. The hut opens June through September, closing during heavy snow. Electricity is minimal; expect no phone signal.

This is a working farm, not a service hut. Arrive by mid-afternoon and give 24 hours notice for meals. Contact the manager directly through local hiking guides or the Roana municipality office; the hut has no dedicated booking system. July and August weekends fill quickly. Most visitors come for the Astico Valley traverse or day walks across the high pastures. Bring a headtorch and warm layers—nights are cold even in summer.
