Rifugio Costa Piana

Rifugio Costa Piana sits at 1,570m on the approach to Monte Rosa in the Pennine Alps. The hut is accessible from Macugnaga via the Passo del Rosa trail, a straightforward 2-hour hike gaining 700m through mixed woodland and alpine pasture. The path is well-marked and suitable for anyone with basic hill fitness. In winter and early spring, snow conditions require mountain experience or a guide.

The rifugio operates as a traditional mountain rest stop rather than a destination hut. It has 25 beds spread across simple dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Staff serve hot meals at lunch and dinner, with a decent selection of pasta, polenta, and local cheeses. The hut runs water from a mountain spring and keeps the bar well-stocked. Opening dates run May through September, with July and August seeing most traffic from walkers approaching the higher passes and peaks above. In shoulder months, staffing is reduced.

Book directly by phone or email during business hours. Peak weekends in July and August fill quickly—contact at least two weeks ahead. Mid-week slots and June slots are easier to secure. The hut accepts cash and cards. There's no formal online booking system, so call early if you're targeting a specific date.
