Rifugio Al Santuario

Rifugio Al Santuario sits at 1,500m in the Julian Alps on the Italian side of the border, serving hikers crossing between the Slovenian and Italian ranges. The hut sits above the Santuario della Madonna di Lussari sanctuary. Access is via marked trails from Bovec (90 minutes) or from Predil Pass (2 hours). Most hikers approach from the Slovenian side via Kranjska Gora or Predil, which takes 3–4 hours depending on your start point. The hut is well-positioned for day walks to nearby peaks and ridge traverses.
The rifugio has 40 beds across simple rooms and operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. Meals are basic Italian mountain fare: pasta, polenta, soups. The kitchen prepares packed lunches for early starts. Showers work, toilets are reliable. This is a working hut, not a resort—expect straightforward hospitality and honest cooking rather than frills. The bar stocks beer, grappa, and local wines.
Book by email or phone 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends, especially if you need a specific room type. Shoulder months (May–June, September) rarely fill. The rifugio keeper speaks Italian and some English; email works reliably. Phone lines can be patchy at this elevation—email is your safest bet. Confirm your arrival time if you're coming late afternoon.
