Rifugio Monte Lussari

Rifugio Monte Lussari sits at 1,790m on Monte Lussari in the Julian Alps, on the Italian side of the Slovenia-Italy border near Tarvisio. Reach it from the village of Piani di Lussari in 1.5 hours on foot, following marked trails through beech forest and alpine meadow. A cable car runs from Piani di Lussari to the summit in 12 minutes if you prefer to skip the walk. The hut serves as a base for ridge traverses toward Canin and Jof di Montasio, or as a rest stop on longer Julian Alps crossings.
The rifugio has 60 beds split across several rooms. Meals are standard mountain fare: hearty dinners and packed lunches available. The kitchen produces decent Italian-Slovenian cuisine. Facilities include hot showers, heating in the common area, and a small bar. Mobile signal is patchy but usually works. The hut operates year-round, though weekends in winter can be quiet. Expect it to be busier during summer school holidays (mid-July to late August) and on Sundays in good weather.
Book direct by phone well ahead for summer weekends. July and August require booking 4-6 weeks in advance. Shoulder seasons (May, June, September) are easier to arrange at short notice. The phone line rings during daylight hours only. Request half-board if you plan to stay more than one night, as meals are cheaper on multi-night rates.
