Berghotel Obersteinberg

Berghotel Obersteinberg sits at 1778m in the Engstligen valley, deep in the Bernese Oberland between Adelboden and Lenk. Reach it on foot from Adelboden in 2.5 hours via the Engstligenalp. The trail climbs steadily through forest and alpine meadow, gaining 700m. From Lenk, the approach takes 3 hours from the Leiterli cable car station. Both routes are well-marked. The hut works as a base for day walks across the Engstligen plateau or as a waypoint on longer traverses across the Bernese highlands.
Berghotel Obersteinberg has 60 bed spaces in mostly 4–6 bed rooms. Kitchen facilities prepare simple meals; it operates a restaurant serving lunch and dinner daily. The hut has running water, solar-heated showers, and drying rooms for wet gear. Mobile phone coverage exists but is unreliable. Open year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. Winter mountaineers sometimes use it as a base for ski touring.
Book direct by phone or email. July and August are busy; reserve 3–4 weeks ahead for these months. June and September are quieter. The hut is family-run and takes reservations for groups outside high season. Check conditions before winter visits—road access to the Engstligenalp can be closed.
