About

Rottalhütte sits at 2,755m in the Bernese Oberland, accessed from the Rotsond valley. The standard approach is from Kandersteg via the Oeschinen valley and Blausee, taking 4–5 hours to reach the hut. Alternatively, approach from the Kiental side via Schilthornbahn (cable car) and descend to the hut in 2–3 hours. The terrain is alpine meadow and scree with some scrambling sections. Weather changes fast at this elevation, so start early and carry a headtorch.
The SAC-managed hut has 28 beds in shared dormitories. The warden serves meals including hearty dinners and basic breakfasts—book your meal order when you reserve. Drinking water is available; there is no self-catering kitchen. The hut operates year-round but staffing is minimal in winter, so contact ahead if visiting outside summer. Expect basic mountain hut comfort: no private rooms, cold water for washing, and pit toilets. The location works well as a base for ascending Doldenhorn (3,638m) or traversing towards Blümlisalp.
Book by email or phone at least 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut is popular with groups and school trips during summer holidays. Phone outside peak season (October–May) as email responses can be slow. Arrive by mid-afternoon to allow time for the warden to prepare dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contact the hut directly by email or phone as soon as your dates are set; with only 28 beds, popular weekends fill quickly in summer.
The hut operates seasonally during the summer months; confirm exact dates and staffing with the hut before planning your visit.
From Kandersteg via Oeschinen valley and Blausee takes 4–5 hours, or from Kiental via Schilthornbahn cable car then a 2–3 hour descent; expect alpine meadow, scree, and scrambling sections.
Meals are served at the hut and drinking water is available; there is no self-catering kitchen, so you rely on the hut for food.
Not ideal for beginners—the scrambling sections and 2,755m elevation demand mountain experience, though the cable car option from Kiental reduces the technical demand for the approach.
