Chalet du Soldat

Chalet du Soldat sits at 1751m in the Bernese Oberland, serving as a solid base for hiking the Simmental valley. The hut lies on the Simmentaler Höhenweg, a high-level traverse that connects several valley systems. Most hikers approach from Lenk (45 minutes to 1 hour) or from Wimmis via the Simmental (2–3 hours). You can also reach it from Zweisimmen. The surrounding terrain offers straightforward valley hiking with views toward the Wildstrubel and surrounding ridges.
The chalet accommodates around 35 guests across simple dormitory and a few double rooms. Meals focus on local cooking—expect hearty mountain fare and fresh dairy products. The kitchen supplies packed lunches if you order them in advance. The hut runs year-round, though staffing varies seasonally, so confirm availability outside summer. Water comes from the property; there's no wi-fi or power sockets in the rooms.
Book directly by email or phone as soon as you have dates in mind. July and August fill quickly, especially weekends; aim to contact them at least 4–6 weeks ahead for these months. The hut sits on popular walking routes, so even shoulder seasons (June and September) can see decent occupancy. Half-board rates are standard. Groups should notify the hut well in advance of their intended arrival.
