Grueben Hut

Grueben Hut sits at 2,512m on the eastern flank of the Säntis massif in the Bernese Oberland. Reach it from Schwyz via the Schächen valley—a steep 3.5-hour approach on foot. The hut marks the start of several demanding ridge traverses into the Appenzell Alps and serves as a base for peak-baggers targeting the surrounding 2,600m+ summits. This is not a destination for casual walkers.
The hut is a basic alpine shelter with 16 beds across shared dormitories. You cook your own meals in the self-catering kitchen and draw water from the mountain spring. There is no warden, no hot meals, no shower. The hut operates year-round but is most reliable in summer and autumn; winter access depends on snow conditions and your own mountain skills. This is a refuge for self-sufficient parties, not a comfortable overnight stop.
Book directly by email well in advance—at least 6-8 weeks for July and August. The hut has limited capacity and attracts hikers pursuing serious ridge routes. Bring all food, fuel, and supplies with you; there is nothing available locally. Check conditions before heading out, especially in shoulder seasons.
