Oberaarjochhütte

Oberaarjochhütte sits at 3,258m on the Oberaarjoch pass in the Bernese Oberland, linking the Unteraar and Oberaar glaciers. Most hikers approach from Guttannen via the Unteraargletscher, a 4–5 hour trek that crosses glacier terrain and requires basic crevasse sense. From the Grimsel Hospiz, allow 5–6 hours via the Oberaargletscher. Both routes demand sure-footedness on steep snow and ice, especially in early summer. The hut is accessible June to October depending on snow conditions.
The SAC-managed hut holds 30 beds across simple dormitory rooms. Half and full board are available, with a self-catering kitchen also provided if you bring your own supplies. Water comes from meltwater sources on-site. The hut serves as a base for ski touring and glacier mountaineering in the Gotthard massif, including ascents of Finsteraarhorn and surrounding peaks. Winter access is possible for experienced mountaineers with avalanche safety knowledge.

The hut keeper checks snow conditions daily in early season and may restrict access until routes are safe. Bring a headtorch, insulating layers, and sun protection; the exposed location means sudden weather swings.
