Schilthornhütte

Schilthornhütte sits at 2432m on the Schilthorn massif in the Bernese Oberland, commanding views across the Lauterbrunnen Valley toward the Eiger and Jungfrau. The standard approach is from Mürren (1638m), a 2.5-hour steep hike gaining 794m on a well-marked trail. You can also approach from Gimmelwald or Stechelberg via Mürren. The Schilthorn cable car reaches the summit station at 2970m, leaving a 30-minute descent to the hut if you prefer to avoid the climb. Snow can block routes from November through May—check conditions before attempting winter approaches.

The hut is managed by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC/CAS) and sleeps 60 guests in dormitory rooms. Meals are available daily: hearty dinners, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches on request. The hut has running water, basic toilets, and a small common area. It's open from June through October, with weekend service into November depending on snow. The location works well as a base for traverses across the Schilthorn ridge or as a stage hut on multi-day routes linking the Bernese Oberland's major hut network.

Phone the hut directly to reserve beds, especially for weekends or July through August when it fills quickly. Book at least two weeks ahead during peak season. The hut prefers phone contact over email. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a good dinner slot. Solo hikers and small groups rarely face problems, but larger parties should book well in advance.
