Waldhütte Breite

Waldhütte Breite sits at 1,650m in the Appenzell Alps, accessible from multiple trailheads in the surrounding valleys. The most direct approach is from Säntis to the north, taking 2.5 hours via the ridge trail. From the south, Wasserauen is the standard start; count on 3 hours to reach the hut. The hut sits on established hiking routes, making it a logical overnight stop for traverses crossing the range or for climbers basing themselves for day ascents in the area.
The hut holds 40 beds across multiple rooms and offers simple bunkhouse accommodation. Meals are available including dinner and breakfast. Drinking water is on-site, and there are flush toilets. The hut operates year-round, though staffing and meal availability may be limited in winter—check directly before planning a cold-season visit. The location works well for walkers tackling multi-day routes as well as mountaineers using it as a staging point for technical peaks nearby.

Shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October) are less pressured.
