Waldhütte Maur

Waldhütte Maur sits at 1,187m in the northern foothills of the Swiss Alps, within easy reach of Zürich. The hut anchors itself in the Maur valley near the village of Maur, about 25km southeast of the city. You can reach it in 90 minutes by public transport from central Zürich: take the S6 or S16 train to Maur, then walk uphill for 45 minutes through forest. The approach is steady but not steep, making it ideal for acclimatizing or for hikers based in or visiting the Zürich region.

The hut holds 70 beds spread across simple dormitory rooms. It has drinking water and flush toilets—practical facilities rather than luxuries. A caretaker runs the place year-round and serves meals; phone ahead to arrange dinner. The building works well as a base for day walks through the forested hills and ridges of the northern limestone Alps, or as an overnight stop on longer routes heading south toward the main Alpine chain. Summer is the obvious season, though the low elevation means autumn hiking here remains possible when higher passes close.
